Meet Our Candidates

With the federal election just around the corner, we talked with the current Members of Parliament as well as their candidates.

Warren Entsch
Federal Member for Leichhardt

How have you been helping to drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

I have been focused on delivering a new industry, tropical sports conditioning for Cairns. I have successfully secured funding for a broad range of critical sports infrastructure projects, including for hockey, basketball, tennis, netball, soccer and aquatics, to facilitate this new industry. However, the biggest achievement for me personally over the past three years was my role in delivering marriage equality in Australia and campaigning for access to medical cannabis.

What are your plans to help small to medium size businesses? How have you helped them so far?

More than 19,600 businesses in Far North Queensland will directly benefit from our tax relief measures announced in last year’s federal budget. We also delivered a $20,000 instant asset write-off that is helping small businesses invest in the cost of machinery and equipment and delivered the $60 million Apprentice Subsidy Scheme.

What are your goals for the next three years should you get re-elected?

I want to ensure those living in the Daintree have access to main equivalent power which will go a long way to reducing the 10 million litres of diesel that is being burnt annually to power generators.

I also want to deliver the infrastructure Far North Queenslanders expect, including busting congestion along the Captain Cook Highway and ensuring the continued sealing of the Peninsula Development Road in Cape York.

Bob Katter
Federal Member for Kennedy

How have you been helping to drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

I put a lot of work in getting the overpasses coming in from the south of Cairns. I was also instrumental in reversing the decision to allow the import of bananas to Australia (the banana industry in FNQ brings in $400-500m annually). I helped increase cattle prices by re-opening the export market to Indonesia and have been eliminating mobile black spots in the region and will continue to do so until we have acceptable coverage throughout the North.

What are your plans to help small to medium size businesses? How have you helped them so far?

Helping newsagencies that are under attack from Coles and Woolworths trying to get lotto licenses and protecting our pharmacies by not letting medical centres get a pharmacy whenever they want. KAP has been leading the fight for a fair go for taxis from the unfair playing field of rideshare. We will continue the fight against multinationals who are wiping out small businesses.

What are your goals for the next three years should you get re-elected?

We need to get a tunnel through the range from near Lake Tinaroo to north of Gordonvale. We are determined to get dams and water security for the North, bring down the price of electricity, insurance and fuel prices (more ethanol will assist with fuel security and boost agriculture) and have a separate State for the North so we get our fair share.

Elida Faith
Labor candidate for Leichhardt

What are your plans to help small to medium size businesses?

Labor will deliver tax relief for small and medium size businesses and give the ACCC more teeth by improving access to justice for small businesses to restore the balance between the workforce ensuring a fair go for all.

How will you help drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

Labor will deliver the infrastructure our region needs including extending the Bruce Highway from the Cairns city to the Cairns Airport and investing $40 million to upgrade key intersections along this section of road.

What are your major platforms in the upcoming election?

Restore funding to schools and hospitals, restore penalty rates to our retail and hospitality workers to secure jobs.

What made you decide to run for the seat of Leichhardt with the Labor party?

I joined the Australian Labor Party to make our region heard. It’s time for Leichhardt to have its fair share to ensure that our children have jobs and futures here.

Chad Anderson
Independent candidate for Leichhardt

What are your plans to help small to medium size businesses?

Get rid of red tape. The time and money involved in complying with excessive regulations could be more productively applied to grow businesses.

How will you help drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

Simplify the tax system, make it easier to employ people, build better infrastructure for businesses that rely on roads, rail and ports to transport their goods and offer new opportunity by encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit.

What are your major platforms in the upcoming election?

Building a stronger economy, providing funding for universities, pro-immigration policy, action on climate change and action on cost of living.

What made you decide to run for the seat of Leichhardt as an independent?

I want to create a new model of leadership that represents the community, serves the electorate, addresses the costs of living issues and puts an end to the corruption that is devastating our democracy and our community.

Jen Sackley
United Australian Party candidate for Leichhardt

What are your plans to help small to medium size businesses?

We will stop companies paying tax quarterly on estimates. This alone will release 70 billion into our economy

How will you help drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

The UAP will stimulate growth through a 20 per cent zonal tax concession, which will provide an incentive to regional industries and attract high-quality doctors and teachers to the region.

What are your major platforms in the upcoming election?

Reducing power prices and the sale of many Australian assets and dredging the Cairns harbor to the specifications of a strategic port.

What made you decide to run for the seat of Leichhardt with the UAP?

Leichhardt is my home by birth. To represent the people of Leichhardt is a great honour and not something to be taking lightly. I am committed to the interests of the people and families of Leichardt.

Frank Beveridge
LNP candidate for Kennedy

What are your plans for small to medium size businesses?

I have been in small business for over 30 years and am personally aware of the challenges involved. I welcome the government’s move to reduce the tax rate for small business, but much more needs to be done to reduce the red and green tape in setting up and running a business.

How will you help drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

New jobs in the regions will come from a number of agricultural industries as well as tourism. These, in turn, will drive other jobs that follow.

What are your major platforms in the upcoming election?

Job creation and sustainability for our regions. The four main areas are transport, water, telecommunications and energy.

What made you decide to run for the seat of Kennedy with LNP?

Having spent 16 years in local government, I understand that power is with the government of the day. No independent has ever built a dam in Queensland and never will.

Brett McGuire
Labor candidate for Kennedy

What are your plans to help small to medium size businesses?

I will make sure businesses are given every advantage to ensure their viability into the future, and I will work tirelessly to improve their market access.

How will you help drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

We are committed to achieving 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030. Labor’s Australian Skills Authority will ensure that temporary visas are only made available when a genuine skills gap cannot be met with local workers.

What are your major platforms in the upcoming election?

I will be a vocal advocate for better highways. The economic benefits to improving the north south access to southern markets for our primary producers will boost our regional communities.

What made you decide to run for the seat of Kennedy for Labor?

My children are the sixth generation of McGuire’s born and raised in Kennedy. So, like everyone, I want to leave my patch of the world better for my kids.

Daniel McCarthy
KAP candidate for Leichhardt

What are your plans to help small to medium size businesses?

Reduce the bureaucracy imposed on businesses and the unacceptably high electricity and insurance costs.

How will you help drive new job and economic opportunities for people in the region?

Sensible federal investment in infrastructure is vital to our region reaching the potential we deserve.

What are your major platforms in the upcoming election?

Lowering electricity and insurance costs, overpasses on the northern beaches, duplicating the Kuranda Range, building new dams, sealing the remainder of the Peninsula Development Road, reducing crocodile numbers, amend the Reef 2050 Plan to allow for future capital works in our shipping channel

What made you decide to run for the seat of Leichhardt with the KAP party?

From within the KAP I can take on Labor and the LNP and fight for the issues dear to our hearts in the north without having to tow the major party line or please faceless political masters in the southern capital cities.
